DETROIT (4/1/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team opened Horizon League play with a 6-1 win over Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon from the Titan Tennis Courts.
The visiting Panthers of Milwaukee earned the doubles point after taking two of three to open the match, but the Titans bounced back and swept all six singles points.
Senior
Anna Davydova picked up a 7-6, 7-5 win from the top line and freshman
Marie Maitrot followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win from No. 2. Freshman
Pauline Van Herck added a win in straight sets from No. 6 with scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
Sophomore
Iris Thioux, senior
Nynke Van Der Goot and freshman
Ksenia Providokhina all picked up singles wins as well, with the trio earning the wins in three sets.
Thioux bounced back from a 6-3 defeat in the opening set to take the match with wins of 6-3 and 6-1. Van Der Goot won the opener of No. 4, 7-6, but fell in the second 6-3. The senior rallied for a 6-3 win in the third frame to earn the win. Providokhina earned the three-set victory with wins of 6-0, 2-6 and 7-5.
The tandem of Davydova and Van Der Goot earned the Titans lone doubles win after taking No. 2, 6-2.
Detroit Mercy improves to 5-8 overall and 1-0 in Horizon League play with the win. The Panthers, meanwhile, fall to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
The Titans are back in action from the Titan Tennis Courts tomorrow against Green Bay. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. from the Motor City.
