Titan Tennis Hosts Senior Days vs. Wright State, NKU

DETROIT (4/14/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's tennis teams are both in action this weekend as they host Wright State and Northern Kentucky on Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 15-16, from the Franklin Athletic Club.
 
The men's tennis team will host Senior Day against Wright State on Saturday, with women's Senior Day festivities scheduled for Sunday against NKU.
 
All matches have been moved indoors to Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, Mich. Saturday's matches against Wright State are slated for a 5 p.m. start and Sunday's action will begin at 1 p.m.
 

THE SCHEDULE
Saturday, April 15 at Franklin Athletic Club
5 p.m. – Titan men (8-11, 2-1) vs. Wright State (6-16, 1-4)
5 p.m. – Titan women (6-10, 2-2) vs. Wright State (13-11, 3-3)
 
Sunday, April 16 at Franklin Athletic Club
1 p.m. – Titan men vs. NKU (6-6, 2-3)
1 p.m. – Titan women vs. NKU (5-10, 2-4)
 

SCOUTING THE TITANS
The Men
Detroit Mercy suffered a tough 4-3 loss in their Horizon League opener against Green Bay, but bounced back with a pair of conference road wins over Youngstown State and Cleveland State last weekend to improve to 8-11 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Titans are 3-3 from home this season.
 
Sophomore Artem Vasheshnikov leads the squad with 18 singles wins, including a 7-4 mark from the Titans' top line. Junior Nathan Ponton has been the Titans hottest player, winning his last six from the third line of singles to improve to 17-6 on the season. Ponton is 9-1 in his last 10 singles matches. Senior Patryk Koscielski has won three in a row at No. 2 and ranks third on the team with 13 singles wins, followed by sophomore Adam Zychowicz with 10 wins.
 
The Women
The Titans enter the weekend at 6-10 overall after falling in a pair of road matches last weekend that brought Detroit Mercy back to a level 2-2 mark in Horizon League play. The Titans will look to get back on track from home this weekend where they are 5-1 on the season.
 
Senior Nynke Van Der Goot leads the squad with 13 singles wins and is 9-6 from the fourth and fifth positions. Classmate Anna Davydova has 10 singles wins, including seven from the Titans' top line. Davydova has won four in a row entering the weekend. Sophomore Iris Thioux and freshman Ksenia Providokhina each have eight wins as well.
 

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
The Men
Wright State enters the weekend at 6-16 overall and 1-4 in Horizon League action. The Raiders have won three of their last four, including a 4-3 win over UIC. Jacob Perkins leads the squad with nine singles victories, five of which have come at the No. 1 position. Fernando Nardelli has eight wins and brings a four-game win streak to the Motor City.
 
The Women
Wright State enters the weekend at 13-11 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Raiders won their HL openers against Green Bay and Milwaukee, before three straight losses to YSU, Cleveland State and UIC. Wright State ended the skid with consecutive wins over Valpo and Wittenberg and enter on a two-game win streak. Karoline Haller has 10 wins from No. 1 singles and Elaine Cloern has 15 wins with an 8-2 mark from Nos. 2-3.
 

SCOUTING THE NORSE
The Men
Northern Kentucky enters the weekend 6-6 overall and 2-3 in league action. The Norse were edged by Green Bay in their opener, 4-3, but bounced back with a win over Cleveland State. NKU lost consecutive matches to YSU and Valpo before ending the skid with a win over UIC. Mate Virag leads the squad with 10 singles wins and a 7-5 mark at No. 1, while Javier Araya is 6-2 from Nos. 2-3.
 
The Women
NKU enters the weekend at 5-10 overall and 2-4 in HL play. The Norse have wins over Green Bay and Valpo, with losses against Milwaukee, Cleveland State, YSU and UIC. Margita Sunjic is playing extremely well on a seven-match win streak. Sunjic is 13-4 overall and 11-2 from No. 1 singles. KLara Skopac is 13-7 overall and 9-5 at No. 2 singles to headline the Norse.
 

ON TAP
Following this weekend's action, the Titan men and women return to Horizon League action as the men travel to UIC (Apr. 22) and Valpo (Apr. 23) and the women take on Oakland (Apr. 19), UIC (Apr. 22) and Valpo (Apr. 23).
