SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (4/15/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win on Senior Day in Horizon League action over Wright State from Franklin Athletic Club.
Prior to the start of the match, the 2017 senior class of
Chance Conley,
Ismail Kadyrov,
Patryk Koscielski and
Kacper Stelmaszak was honored for their contributions to the Titan tennis program, and it was the seniors leading the way to victory.
Conley and Koscielski kicked off doubles by powering to a 6-0 win at No. 2, before junior
Nathan Ponton and sophomore
Artem Vasheshnikov clinched the point for the Titans with a 6-2 win on the top doubles line.
Conley got Detroit Mercy going in singles as the senior picked up the first win, a triumph of 6-3 and 6-1 from No. 6. Ponton took No. 3, 6-2 and 6-3, to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Titans.
The Raiders took the top line to get on the board, but Stelmaszak took No. 4, 6-4 and 7-6, and Koscielski outlasted his Wright State counterpart with a 6-2, 5-7 and 6-3 win at No. 2.
The Titans improve to 9-11 overall and 3-1 in league matches with the victory. The nine wins match the highest season win total since the program was reinstated in 2007.
Detroit Mercy will look to keep the momentum going as the squad returns to action on Sunday against NKU. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. from Franklin Athletic Club.
