ANN ARBOR, Mich. (4/29/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team saw its season come to a close on Saturday afternoon as the Titans fell to Cleveland State, 4-1, in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament from the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.
Cleveland State opened the match by taking the doubles point and it proved to be the difference as the teams appeared headed towards a split in singles.
The Vikings won the first two singles points at Nos. 4 and 5 to surge ahead, 3-0. The Titans would need all four remaining singles matches to advance and junior
Nathan Ponton kept Detroit Mercy alive with a win in straight sets at No. 3.
With
Artem Vasheshnikov and
Patryk Koscielski leading at the first and second positions, the Vikings picked up a win at No. 6 singles to spoil Detroit Mercy's plans for a comeback. Vasheshnikov held a 3-2 lead in the second set of No. 1 after taking the first, 7-5, and Koscielski held a 5-0 lead in the tie-breaking third set at No. 2.
The match marks the final collegiate action for the Titan senior class of
Patryk Koscielski,
Chance Conley,
Kacper Stelmaszak and
Ismail Kadyrov – all of whom played a vital role in helping the Titans reach 11 wins, the most for the program since 1991.
