DETROIT (7/18/19) -- From July 10-23, DetroitTitans.com will release the Top 10 Moments of 2018-19 as voted on by members of the Detroit Mercy athletic staff. Each day, a new moment will be posted on DetroitTitans.com as well as on each of the Titan social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).
Coming in at No. 4 in our Top 10 Moments of 2018-19 is the phenomenal year that
Ben Kendell put together in cross country and track and field to finish off his collegiate career.
Kendell came into his graduate year with a few goals in mind and accomplished them all en route to earning the Horizon League's Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor, the highest individual honor presented annually to the league's top male and female student-athletes who best exemplify the dignity and high purpose of the league and its membership and who demonstrate outstanding achievements in academics, athletics and extracurricular activities.
In cross country, he won the Horizon League title - after recording two-straight runner-up efforts - and was tabbed the HL Athlete of the Year.
He would go on to take second at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship - the highest place in a regional run by a Titan in school history and the best HL finish since 2008 - and placing 95th at the NCAA DI National Championship with a school 10k record.
On the year, he won four of his seven races and set the school record in the 4-mile (19:39 at 2018 Running Fit-Detroit Mercy Titan Invitational), 8K (23:54 at 2018 Great Louisville Classic) and 10K (30:35 at 2018 NCAA GLR).
In track and field, he was the Horizon League Male Outdoor Athlete of the Year as he won the 5000-meters at the HL Outdoor Championships with a conference record-breaking time of 14:23.94. He also qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships in the 10,000m for the second-straight year and claimed 21st in the race in 30:06.
In the classroom, he was the Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the fall and a USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree in cross country and track and field. In addition, he was selected to the CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District Team.
