HUNTINGTON, W Va. (9/14/2026) -- Three Titans fired rounds under par and one is in the hunt for the win as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team had a good start in the first day of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Monday.

The Titans are in 10th place with a 572 (287-285) - 12 shots outside the top five - at the par 71, 6,523-yard Guyan Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia. 

Freshman Christian Helzer was on fire right from the start and is tied for eighth with a 137 (71-66), just two strokes behind the leader. His second-round 5-under 66 is the second-best score by a freshman in school history - trailing only David Byrne's 6-under 65 at the IPFW Fall Classic in 2006 - and tied for the third-best mark in school history. 

He started the day with eight straight pars and had 12 pars and a birdie in the first 13 holes before back-to-back bogeys. He recovered with a birdie and two pars for his even-par effort.

Helzer was on fire in the second round, opening with two pars before tapping in birdies on 15, 16 and 17. He ended the round with six birdies and 11 pars for a 5-under 66. 

Senior Ethan Oblak carded a 141 (68-73) as he began the day with a 3-under 68. He posted seven birdies and seven pars on the opening 18, and then came back with a 2-over 73, tallying three more birdies and 11 pars.

Sophomore Peyton Lawley registered a 143 (75-68) and is tied for 39th. He rebounded from a slow start with a monster front nine in the second round, putting in five birdies and three pars, and finishing with six birdies for his career-best 3-under 68.

Senior Mason Sokolowski shares 53rd with a 146 (74-72) as he had three birdies and 13 pars in the afternoon session for his 1-over 72, while senior David Swab is tied for 65th with a 148 (74-74). 

The final round of the event will tee off at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.
