Final Match Results
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The women's squad took on the Butler Bulldogs in Horizon League action Saturday as the Titans wrapped up their conference opening two-match weekend.
Detroit fell 7-0 and now sit at 0-13 overall and 0-2 in the Horizon League.
Two of the Titan's doubles pairings were tight as the No. 1 pair of sophomore
Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) and junior
Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) fell by a close 9-7 margin. The No. 2 combination of freshmen
Raina Halabi (Beamsville, ON/Niagara Academy of Tennis) and
Elena Strakhova (Penza, Russia/#216 "Didakt") forced their match-up to a tiebreaker but fell 8-7 (7-2) in the end.
In singles, freshman
Julia Fernandes (Mississauga, ON/John Fraser) and senior
Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) were the lone Titans to force a third set. Fernandes fell behind 6-0 after the opening frame before a 6-2 comeback in the second tied it up, but a 6-3 defeat in the third would seal her fate. Weldon started her match the opposite way taking the opening set 6-3 before falling by the same 6-3 score in the second and third sets.
The women will begin a two-match road trip next weekend heading to Valparaiso Saturday and UIC on Sunday. Saturday's match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., while Sunday's tilt is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
