MATCH RESULTS
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The first dual-match of the season and the first home match of the 2012 campaign both came in the same night for the women's tennis team as the Titans (0-1) hosted the Western Michigan Broncos (1-1) at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
Detroit ended up falling by a 7-0 score in the match which featured a live audio stream as RadioTennis.com provided online listeners from around the globe a free opportunity to follow the Titans.
"I think we were a little nervous early in doubles and it showed on the scoreboard. Once singles started we became more comfortable and played better and continued to fight until the end. It is only natural that our young team would be nervous tonight but controlling that is something we will work on moving forward," said women's tennis head coach Pjotrs Necajevs.
After falling in the doubles point, a pair of Titans split the first two sets and forced a third set tiebreaker. Sophomore
Raina Halabi at No. 4 singles lost the opening frame 6-2 but fought back with a 6-4 win in the second set. The match would come down to the breaker and Western Michigan sophomore Kathleen Hawkins came out on top with a 10-6 win.
The other Titan to force a third set was newcomer
Chloe Karoub who was up against senior Maria Nivia at No. 2 singles. Nivia won a 7-5 opening set and Karoub came back with a 7-5 second set win of her own. The final singles match of the night would end in favor of the Broncos as Nivia managed a 10-7 score for the win.
Detroit will host Eastern Michigan on Friday at the Franklin Athletic Club in the second of three straight home matches in Southfield. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
