Titans Headed to Horizon League Tournament With Win

Match Results

GREEN BAY, Wisc. -- The Detroit Titans are headed back to the Horizon League Tournament after facing a must-win situation Friday evening. The Titans went into Green Bay needing a win and walked out with a 5-2 victory over the Phoenix that clinches the team a berth in the conference tournament.

A pair of doubles wins coupled with four in singles helped Detroit (6-11, 3-4 Horizon League) in the victory over Green Bay (3-13, 2-6 HL).

Elena Strakhova and Amanda Cornwell worked for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles while Raina Halabi and Chloe Karoub also contributed with an 8-4 win at the No. 2 spot. Both the No. 1 and 2 combinations for Detroit have 5-2 records in conference matches.

In singles play, four straight set wins propelled the Titans into the tournament. Singles No. 1-4 were all able to put away their opponent as Halabi, Karoub, Strakhova and Cornwell kept the season alive.

Cornwell and Karoub improved to 6-1 in Horizon League singles matches while Strakhova is now 4-3.

The Titans remain in the No. 6 seed in the conference with one more match remaining at Milwaukee Saturday at 6:00 p.m. A win in that match coupled with a pair of Wright State losses Saturday at Youngstown State and Sunday at Cleveland State can help Detroit move up to the No. 5 seed.

The Horizon League Tournament will be April 27-29 in Indianapolis at North Central High School. The seeds, match-ups and schedules will be determined after the conclusion of this weekend.
