SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (2/24/2013) - The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team earned its third win in a row with a 5-2 victory over Dayton at the Franklin Athletic Club on Sunday evening.
The Titans (3-6) took two doubles matches and were leading the third, 6-5, before it was called off. Dayton (2-8) took the top two singles matches, but UDM won the other four to earn its third win.
Pablo Nunez and
Jay Joshi remained unbeaten at 3-0, as they grabbed an 8-2 victory at second doubles.
Cesar Escobar Serrano and
Chris Cheung earned their third win of the season as they downed their opponent, 8-2, at third doubles. Cheung now has a total of 42 doubles wins in his career, putting him in a tie for second with Chris McMican in Titan's history, and two wins behind the school record, 44, held by Anthony Grassadonia.
Cheung made short work of his opponent at fifth singles cruising in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to earn his fourth win on the year. Nunez and
Rafael Orantes earned wins at fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Nunez posted his first win of the season with a 7-6 (4), 6-4, tally at fourth singles and Orantes recorded his team-leading fifth victory at fifth singles, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Serrano rallied to take match to a third set against UD's Josh Malyon and was able to pull out a win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. It was his third singles victory of the season and the 50th of his career, moving him within five wins of the school record, currently held by women's coach Pjotrs Necajevs.
The Titans will return to action when they host Duquesne on Friday, March 1, at 7:00 p.m., at the Franklin Athletic Club.
