DETROIT (3/22/13) –The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team will travel to Ohio for a pair of doubleheaders against two Horizon League opponents on Saturday and Sunday. UDM will play Youngstown State on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and then Cleveland State on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Detroit
UDM will return to the courts after a two week break since its last match against Bentley on March 10. The Titans are 4-8 on the year after downing Bentley, 7-0, in Florida.
Over the break, senior
Pablo Nunez took part in the X Central American games and led his home country of Costa Rica to a bronze medal. During the event, he went 5-1 in singles play and 2-2 in doubles action.
Freshman
Rafael Orantes is riding a four-match winning streak at singles to put his overall record at 7-4.
Chris Cheung has earned five wins on the season and
Alex Latosinsky has taken four matches at first singles.
The pair of
Mike Basha and Latosinsky have teamed-up for a 5-4 record at first doubles and
Jay Joshi and Orantes are 4-1, with three wins coming at second doubles.
Youngstown State
The Penguins come into the weekend with a 6-5 record after going 1-2 on a spring break trip to Louisiana where their only victory came in a close, 4-3, win over Lamar.
Silviu Mistreanu won at first singles, while Zeeshan Ismail and Rodrigo Campos won at fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Mistreanu has six wins at first singles, while Sebastian Hagn has recorded six wins of his own at second singles. Campos has combined for six wins at fourth and fifth singles.
In doubles play, Hagn and Dawoud Kabli are 6-2 at first doubles and Silviu and Rosa Felipe are 6-4 at third doubles.
Cleveland State
The Vikings are 3-9 on the year. They have dropped six of their previous seven matches, with the win coming at home against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 23.
CSU is a young team, with a pair of juniors and one senior on the squad this year. Junior Matt Kuelker has earned five wins at second singles and sophomores Niklas Jonsson and Jorg van der Vloet have both earned four wins on the year.
Jonsson and Ali Shabib are 5-3 at first doubles this year, including 1-0 against nationally-ranked opponents. Nolan Marks and Joe Van Meter have teamed-up for five wins at second doubles.
On the Horizon
The Titans will continue Horizon League play when the men and women play a doubleheader against Wright State on Saturday, March 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
