Match ResultsSOUTHFIELD, Mich. (4/12/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 win over the Valparaiso Crusaders in Horizon League play Saturday afternoon at the Franklin Athletic Club.
The win was the fourth for Detroit (9-7, 4-3 Horizon League) in the Horizon League and a good way for the Titans to make it back into the win column following the heartbreaking 4-3 loss to UIC on Friday.
Valparaiso (2-17, 1-4 HL) was unable to gather any momentum as the Titans started out on fire right from the beginning in doubles. Sophomore
Nino Sujashvili and senior
Elena Strakhova paired up as the No. 1 UDM tandem and won 8-3. Sophomore
Irina Slizovskaya and senior
Julia Fernandes clinched the doubles point for Detroit with an 8-0 win in the No. 2 spot.
In singles, the Titans rolled to straight set victories in positions 1-5 and did not have a competitor at No. 6 singles and therefore lost the point.
Freshman
Viktoria Laskutova won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Slizovskaya dominated with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 score in the No. 2 spot.
Sophomore
Valeryia Kulikovskaya won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Sujashvili continued the winning tradition at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory and freshman
Anna Davydova won 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 position.
The next match for Detroit will be the final contest of the dual-match season as the Titans will host Oakland on April 19 for senior day. The match time and location is still yet to be determined and will depend largely on the weather. Stay tuned for updates on www.DetroitTitans.com.
