SOUTH BEND, Ind. (3/15/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team faced its toughest opponent of the season as the Titans dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 36 Notre Dame on Sunday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
It was the second ranked foe of the year for Detroit (4-8) as it played a nationally-ranked Michigan State squad earlier in the season.
Junior
Rafael Orantes recorded the only win on the day as he came from behind to beat Michael Fredericka at No. 3, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
Sophomores
Ismail Kadyrov and
Kacper Stelmaszak both battled in their matches as Kadyrov lost, 6-0, 7-6 (2), at No. 2, while Stelmaszak fell 6-2, 7-6 (6), at No. 5. At top singles, sophomore
Patryk Koscielski put up a good fight in a 6-2, 6-4 setback to No. 22 Quentin Monaghan.
The Fighting Irish gained the advantage right away winning the doubles point, but Orantes teammed up with sophomore
Chance Conley to upend Drew Dawson and Brendon Kempin, 6-4, at No. 3.
Detroit will have one more non-conference match-up before opening Horizon League play as the Titans host Michigan State next Sunday, March 22. Depending on the weather, the match will either be held at Noon on campus at the Titan Tennis Courts at the James K. Campbell Complex or indoors at 6:00 p.m., at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
