DETROIT (3/2/2015) -- A chance to practice in warm weather and get some much needed playing time outdoors has the University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's tennis teams traveling to the Sunshine State this week.
Each team is scheduled to play four matches down in Florida.
The men's team will open the spring break competition with a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 3, as Detroit visits Division II power Rollins College at 1:00 p.m., before taking on Montana State Billings at Star Island Resort in Kissimmee, Florida, 4:30 p.m.
The Titans will then play Post University (NY) on Wednesday at Star Island Resort before finishing the trip with a match-up against Mount St. Mary's (Md.) on Friday, Match 6, at 10:00 a.m., at the Oak Street Community Center.
Rollins is ranked No. 13 in Division II and is 3-3 on the year, while Post is just starting its season and has dropped its only match of the season.
Division II Montana State Billings is 0-4 heading to Florida, while Mount St. Mary's is 3-1 and opened spring break with a 7-0 win over Ohio Northern on Sunday.
Detroit is 1-5 on the season, but have a few close 4-3 losses on its ledger. The lone win was a 6-1 tally over Wayne State. Freshman
Nathan Ponton led the team with seven singles victories, while sophomore
Patryk Koscielski has tallied six wins in singles and another five in doubles.
The women's squad will go down to Florida to battle Presbyterian and Nova Southeastern on Wednesday Grand Valley State on Thursday and Mount St. Mary's on Friday, all at the Sanlando Park Tennis Center in Orlando.
Presbyterian is 8-3 on the year and has won three of its last four by a 7-0 score over The Mount, Montana State and Newberry. Nova Southeastern is ranked No. 10 in Division II and is 6-0 on the year. Grand Valley State is ranked No. 39 and is 15-3 on the season. The Lakers were runners-up in the GLIAC, losing to Wayne State in the finals in the fall, while the Mountaineers are 3-2.
The Titan women just completed a three-match sweep in Chicago as Detroit defeated Northern Kentucky (6-0), Northern Iowa (4-3) and Chicago State (4-2) this past weekend and are 6-5 on the season.
Sophomore
Anna Davydova leads the team with 14 singles victories – all at No. 4 - while junior
Irina Slizovskaya has recorded 11, mostly at No. 2 and No. 3. Davydova also has 10 doubles wins to pace the squad, while Slizovskaya has nine and junior
Nino Sujashvili has collected seven.
