YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (3/29/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis mounted a comeback in singles play, but Titans just came up short falling at Youngstown State, 4-3, on Sunday morning.
It was the fourth time this season that Detroit (4-11, 0-3 HL) lost by a 4-3 score.
Youngstown State (6-9, 2-0 HL) took control early by winnings the doubles point with triumphs at No. 2 and No. 3. In singles, the Titans came back to claim three matches and push the Penguins to the brink.
Sophomore
Nathan Ponton dispatched Hugo Morth, 6-1, 7-6 (5), at No. 2, for his third win of the dual campaign in the second slot.
Junior
Rafael Orantes defeated El Mekawi Bassem, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 and sophomore
Kacper Stelmaszak took care of Dawoud Kabli, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4.
The Titans had some close calls in the other matches as sophomore
Ismail Kadyrov fell, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6 and Koscielski was downed at top singles, 6-4, 6-2.
The Titans will get back on the courts on Saturday, April 4, with a Detroit tennis doubleheader as both the men and women host Wright State. The time and location of the matches are still to be determined due to weather.
