NORMAL, Ill. (9/14/2015) -- Redshirt junior
David Thompson improved on his performances in the first two rounds to lead the Titans as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team wrapped up play at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate on Monday afternoon.
The Titans placed ninth overall in the 18-team field with a 903 (298-298-307) on the 6,915-yard, Par 71 Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois.
Detroit led the field with a 9-under, 4.80 average on the course's Par 5's, while adding a tournament-best four eagles. UDM's 32 birdies were also the fifth-most in the field.
Thompson – who redshirted last season – put together a full tournament for the red, white and blue shooting a 3-over 74 on Monday and finishing tied for 25th with a 224 (75-75-74). His final round included 11 pars and back-to-back birdies on hole one and two.
He led the team with 34 pars and recorded four birdies and an eagle. He also tied for third among the competitors with a 4-under, 4.56 average on the Par 5's.
Junior
Kyle Gaines shared 30th with a 225 (75-72-78) collecting 27 pars, seven birdies and an eagle in his 54 holes. Gaines also led the competition in Par 5 scoring average playing the long holes to a 6-under, 4.33 mark.
Sophomore
Matt Zerbel carded a career-low 226 (76-75-75) in tying for 34th. The second-year Titan started his final round with six-straight pars and finished the final 18 with 13 pars and two birdies.
Senior
Wil Wittmann was 66th with a 232 (73-76-83). Wittmann's two eagles were the most by any golfer in the event and he led Detroit with 10 birdies, tied for the fifth most, while sophomore
Devan Schulert shared 68th in posting a career-best 234 (75-79-80).
Detroit will have some time off before its next tournament as the Titans are scheduled to play in the NKU Collegiate Classic from Sept. 27-28. The event – hosted by Horizon League newcomer Northern Kentucky – will be played at Elks Run Golf course in Batavia, Ohio.
