TOLEDO, Ohio -- The women's tennis team competed in the Toledo Rocket Invitational hosted by the University of Toledo on Friday and Saturday. The event featured Bowling Green, Duquesne, Detroit and the host team from Toledo as the Titans came away with eight overall wins.
"We started slow at first but we were able to come back and win two doubles and four of five singles matches over Duquesne," said interim women's tennis head coach Pjotrs Necajevs.
The Titans had the best results come from their matches against Duquesne. Detroit won both doubles as
Elena Strakhova and
Raina Halabi scored an 8-6 defeat over Judy Li and Chandler Consonery.
Amanda Cornwell and
Julia Fernandes also walked away with a victory by an 8-4 margin over Tara Majdalani and Paula Gruber.
Detroit continued its success over Duquesne in singles as Strakhova scored a 6-3, 4-6, 10-0 win over Vanessa Steiner and Cornwell followed that with a 6-2, 2-6, 10-6 defeat.
Chloe Karoub won her match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, over Gruber and a fourth singles win over Duquesne came from Halabi in yet another 10 point breaker as she came out on top 2-6, 6-0, 10-8 over Majdalani.
"The girls played well and we had better luck on the 10 point breakers. It's a good sign for us because it shows that we can execute under pressure in the deciding moments of a match. We are moving in the right direction and are looking forward to our next tournament," added Necajevs.
In the first doubles match-up against the host Toledo, the lone doubles win came from Karoub as she paired with Daniela Osio of Duquesne and defeated Alexandra Cristello and Amanda Border of Toledo by a 9-8 (3) score.
The eighth win for Detroit came in a singles showdown with Toledo as Strakhova won 7-5, 6-3 over Cristello.
The next fall tournament for the women's team will start next Thursday at the ITA Midwest Regional to be hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, OH. The event runs from Oct. 20-22.
