EAST LANSING -- The final fall tournament of the season came to a close Sunday for the women's tennis team in East Lansing as Michigan State hosted the Green and White Invitational this past weekend.
Julia Fernandes highlighted singles play for the Titans as she finished with wins in two out of three matches. After a loss in her first match-up to Hilary Hager of Michigan State, the sophomore came back to post a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kylee Johnson of Ball State and then won a 6-2, 6-4 match over Paola Rodriguez of Ball State.
On the first day of doubles action,
Elena Strakhova and
Raina Halabi fell in their first match with an 8-6 loss to Bowling Green's Nikki Chiricosta and Mary Hill.
Amanda Cornwell and Fernandes played Wisconsin's Aleksandra Markovic and Angela Chupa and the Badger duo won by an 8-6 score. The other Titan in action,
Chloe Karoub, combined with Daphne Friedrichs of Eastern Michigan and won 8-6 over Dena Boulieries and Lauren Pickerel of Ball State.
In singles on day one, Karoub, Cornwell, Halabi, and Fernandes all fell in their matches with Cornwell taking her contest to a three-set 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 decision. Strakhova was credited with a win in her singles match after her opponent retired.
in doubles on the second day, Strakhova and Halabi were contested with a difficult match against Michigan State's Valentina Rusakova and Michaela Silesova as the Spartans won 8-1. Cornwell and Fernandes came back with a win over Sarah Hebble and Ashlyn Rang of Ball State. Cornwell and Fernandes then moved on to play Ankita Bhatai and Marcelo Rivero of Eastern Michigan and the Titans fell in defeat 8-6.
In singles on day two, Fernandes' win over Johnson of Ball State was the lone Titan victory.
The final day saw the completion of singles play. Detroit won two of its four matches and took a third to a tiebreaking set. Fernandes won her match over Rodriguez and Halabi came up with the other win with a 6-2, 6-3 score over Yen of Michigan State. Strakhova played Nino Mebuke of Eastern Michigan taking the match to three sets but Mebuke would prevail with scores of 7-6, 6-3, 10-7.
The conclusion of the tournament brings the 2011 fall season to a close and the Titans will focus on preparations for the 2012 dual-match season set to begin in January.
