FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Titan netters needed a pair of singles victories to secure its first victory of the season and they did just that with a 4-3 win over IPFW on Friday evening. Two late wins from senior
Amanda Cornwell and sophomore
Julia Fernandes lifted Detroit to a win.
"That's a great win for us. Both doubles came with the high energy we needed from the beginning until the end," said women's tennis head coach Pjotrs Necajevs. "The start of singles was very good, but then IPFW was able to steal the momentum and ours dropped for a bit."
The victory came on the strength of two doubles wins and three singles defeats.
The Titans (1-5) took home the doubles point winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions over IPFW (6-7). The Detroit combination of
Chloe Karoub and Fernandes won 8-6 at No. 1 and the second doubles win came from
Elena Strakhova and
Raina Halabi, who came out on top, 8-4.
With all but two singles matches remaining, the Titans were down 3-2 needing both points for the triumph. Cornwell and Fernandes were both in third sets and looking to pull out the team win.
Cornwell, playing in the No. 4 spot, kept the team momentum moving forward with a 6-2 tally in the third set to tie the match and pin the focus on the No. 5 singles match and Fernandes, who was striving for the final and deciding point. The sophomore came up with the result the team needed with a 6-1 final set and the victory-clinching fourth point.
"Cornwell was down 2-0 in the third set, but she was able to control her emotions and close with a 6-2 win. Julia clinched the match for us with a confident 6-1 third set," said Necajevs. "The girls did a great job and we showed our team character. We look forward to our next match to continue building confidence."
Detroit will next be in play at IPFW on Saturday evening as the Titans will match-up with Chicago State on neutral ground at 7:00 p.m.
