DETROIT --
Elena Strakhova won her singles match and was on the victorious side of her doubles contest helping the Detroit Titans (3-7) to a 5-4 win over local rival Wayne State (19-3) Wednesday afternoon.
The Division II host welcomed the Titans on campus Wednesday afternoon and with the scoring setup for Division II, with each singles and doubles match earning a point for your team, Detroit came away with three singles wins and two doubles wins.
Raina Halabi and
Julia Fernandes combined at No. 2 doubles to earn the first Titan point as they won an 8-6 decision. The second team point went to
Amanda Cornwell and Strakhova combining in the No. 1 doubles position to finish with an 8-5 victory. That point put Detroit up 2-0 with seven possible points still up for grabs.
Chloe Karoub added a third point as she won her fourth straight singles match-up, 6-3, 6-1, playing in the No. 3 spot.
The fourth Detroit point came at No. 4 singles as Cornwell was part of a second win on the day downing her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
With three singles matches remaining, the Titans needed just one victory for the team win and Strakhova came through in the No. 2 spot winning her sets, 7-5, 6-2 and giving Detroit the five points they needed for the win.
Wayne State was ranked nationally in the Division II rankings at No. 30 while they were also the No. 3 team in the Midwest Region.
