DETROIT -- The Detroit Titans will begin their conference matches this weekend as both the women and the men will take on Cleveland State Friday evening and Youngstown State Saturday evening. Both matches on Friday and Saturday are scheduled to be doubleheaders starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
Saturday's matches could be moved to 3:00 p.m. on the UDM Campus depending on the weather. An update will be posted on DetroitTitans.com if that occurs.
The women will face Cleveland State Friday night and then Youngstown State Saturday evening with both matches scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Southfield. The men will take on Cleveland State Friday night and face Youngstown State Saturday evening with both start times set for 7:00 p.m. in Southfield.
Looking at Friday's match-ups on the women's side, Detroit (3-7) is coming off a 5-4 win over Wayne State on Wednesday winning three singles matches and adding two more in doubles for the win. It marked the third win in the last five matches for the Titans.
Amanda Cornwell and
Elena Strakhova both won each of their singles match-ups in the Wayne State contest and the two also combined at No. 1 doubles for an 8-5 victory.
Chloe Karoub has won four straight singles matches and has posted a team-best five individual wins in dual match play.
Raina Halabi and
Julia Fernandes also added another point against Wayne State for Detroit as they won at No. 2 doubles by an 8-6 score.
Cleveland State (8-7) brings in a team that has posted an overall 14-2 conference record over the last two years. Junior Nicole Janek, who was just named Horizon League Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, leads the Vikings with a 12-3 singles record. Cleveland State won its last match, a 5-2 decision on a neutral court in Boca Raton, FL, on March 15 over Albany.
Youngstown State (0-9) last played on March 21 as they hosted Pittsburgh falling by a 5-2 score. The team features two upperclassmen and head coach Mark Klysner begins his first year with the women's team. He is also entering his second season as the men's tennis coach.
Last year, Detroit split against the two teams. Cleveland hosted Detroit and won that contest 7-0 and on the last day of the regular season, the Titans went to Youngstown State and posted a 6-1 victory.
Looking at the men's teams, Detroit (5-9) last played on March 6 in Columbia, KY as they fell in a close 4-3 decision to Lindsey Wilson. The Titans have won two of their last four contests as they also won 5-2 at Dayton on Feb. 12.
Cesar Escobar Serrano leads Detroit in singles wins with nine in the spring. He has also posted four straight singles victories and also nine of his last 10.
In doubles play,
Mike Basha and
Chris Cheung have played together for the last eight matches and have compiled a 7-1 record in spring dual-matches, including a 6-1 mark at the No. 1 spot. The Titan duo has won four straight doubles contests together.
Cleveland State (5-7) has posted a 7-0 conference record in each of the last three seasons having won 25 straight Horizon League contests. The Vikings have fallen in three straight non-conference matches taking a trip to Florida and being upended in contests to No. 71 ranked Stetson (L 7-0), Florida Atlantic (L 4-3) and Embry-Riddle (L 7-0).
Youngstown State (5-6) is trying to snap a two-match losing streak after dropping a 6-1 match to No. 71 ranked Stetson and also a 6-1 decision to Northern Illinois. Freshman Silviu Mistreanu leads the team in singles wins this spring with an 8-3 record.
Last season, Cleveland State (L 6-1) and Youngstown State (L 5-2) both hosted Detroit and came out on the winning end of both matches.
The next match for the women will be on March 31 as they will head to Indianapolis to face Butler at 2:00 p.m. The men will also be at Butler earlier in the day on March 31 at 10:00 a.m.
