Tight Horizon League Opener Goes Way of Cleveland State

Match Results

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The women's tennis team at Detroit started off capturing the doubles point before falling by a 4-3 score in the conference opener Friday evening at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.

Amanda Cornwell was one of two Titans (3-8, 0-1 Horizon League) on the evening to win both of her matches. Pairing with Elena Strakhova at No. 1 doubles, the two posted an 8-5 win. Chloe Karoub, the other Titan with two wins on the night, combined with Raina Halabi in the No. 2 spot for an 8-1 smattering of the Vikings (9-7, 1-0 HL) to give Detroit a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

"I am very proud of the girls today," said women's tennis head coach Pjotrs Necajevs. "Hard work in practice pays off during matches and it showed tonight as our girls worked hard to win the doubles point and give us the momentum heading into singles."

In singles play, Cornwell won her second straight singles match-up, and third in her last four contests, as her win tied the match at 2-2. She upended her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, playing in the No. 4 position.

Karoub also earned a straight set victory, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot marking the fifth straight singles win for her and sixth in the spring.

Julia Fernandes held the final card for Detroit as the team match was deadlocked 3-3 with her singles match still undecided. After dropping the first set 6-3, Fernandes roared back in the second for a 6-3 victory of her own to force a third and final set to decide the match. A 6-4 defeat in that final frame would bring the match to a close and give Cleveland State the 4-3 win.

The next match for the women will be tomorrow evening as they will host Youngstown State at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. All matches are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
