SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The first Horizon League victory for Detroit women's tennis came Saturday evening as the Titans (4-8, 1-1 Horizon League) recorded a 6-1 defeat over Youngstown State (0-10, 0-1 HL) at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
Armed with a six-person line-up, Detroit was able to win both doubles matches that were played and earned the third victory by default.
Amanda Cornwell and
Elena Strakhova won 8-6 at No. 1 while
Raina Halabi and
Chloe Karoub won 8-3 in the No. 2 spot to start the Titans off on the right foot.
The singles match-ups saw Detroit win five of six contests en route to the 6-1 toppling.
Chloe Karoub won her sixth straight singles match playing in the No. 2 position and was the only Titan singles win that needed a third set as Karoub won 6-0, 3-6, 10-3.
The remainder of the victories came in straight sets led by
Julia Fernandes' win at the No. 5 spot with a 6-0, 6-0 dominating performance. Cornwell followed close behind with a 6-0, 6-2 score at No. 4 and the final match played was a 7-5, 6-2 win from Strakhova in the No. 3 hole. The other Titan point went to
Alyssa Korson who won her match at No. 6 singles by default.
Cornwell's singles win was her third straight and fourth in her last five while she has paired with Strakhova to post three straight doubles victories. Halabi and Karoub won their second straight doubles match as the team has won the doubles point in its last three outings.
The next match for the women will be on March 31 as they will head to Indianapolis to face Butler at 2:00 p.m.
