SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (1/20/13) - The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team fell to Toledo, 4-3, Sunday night at the Franklin Athletic Club.
Two Titans defeated their opponents in straight sets in singles play.
Chris Cheung defeated his opponent at No. 4, 6-3, 6-4, and freshman
Rafael Orantes won his match in the fifth slot, 6-3, 6-0, for his second win in as many days.
In doubles play, UDM (0-4) took two of three matches finished to earn the point.
Alex Latosinsky and
Mike Basha earned a win at first doubles, 8-6, and the pair of Cheung and
Cesar Escobar Serrano shutout their opponent, 8-0, at third doubles.
Jay Joshi and Orantes were leading, 7-5 (40-30), in second doubles before the match was stopped with the Titans already winning the doubles point.
"The guys competed great tonight," said head coach
Grant Asher. "If we compete like that, we will have a successful season. It's nice to see Rafael [Orantes] earn another win and Chris [Cheung] played another good match, not straying from his style of play."
UDM will be in action again when it travels to Ball State on Friday (1/25) and then to Xavier on Saturday (1/26).
