DETROIT (3/29/13) – The Detroit men's and women's tennis teams will host Wright State in their Horizon League home opener on Saturday at the Franklin Athletic Club.
Detroit Men
UDM is 4-10 (0-2 HL) after dropping its first two Horizon League matches Saturday and Sunday. UDM fell to Cleveland State, 7-0, after dropping a hard fought match to Youngstown State, 4-3, in the Horizon League opener.
The Titans took the doubles point against the Penguins as
Jay Joshi and
Pablo Nunez took second doubles and
Rafael Orantes and
Chris Cheung took third doubles.
Cesar Escobar Serrano and Nunez both took their singles point but YSU took four matches to clinch the match.
Orantes leads UDM with seven wins in the dual match season with four wins at fifth singles and three at sixth. Serrano is 6-2 on the year, with four wins at third singles and a pair in the fourth spot. The pair of
Mike Basha and
Alex Latosinsky has recorded five wins at first doubles to lead UDM. Nunez and Joshi have teamed up for a 4-2 record at second doubles and have added another win at third.
Records in Jeopardy
Senior
Cesar Escobar Serrano is chasing Pjotrs Necajevs for the all-time wins records at Detroit. Serrano currently sits at 53 career victories, just two shy of Necajevs mark of 55.
Chris Cheung currently holds the all-time doubles wins record with 39, but classmate
Alex Latosinsky sits just one win behind him entering the match this weekend.
Detroit Women
The Titans enter this Easter weekend with a 5-5 (0-2 HL) record and are a perfect 4-0 in home matches. Prior to dropping its previous two matches, UDM had won five straight matches in which it only lost six points.
Irina Slizovskaya has won six of her previous seven matches, taking one at the first three positions each and three at fourth singles. Valery Kulikovskaya has five wins at fifth singles and has added another in the fourth slot.
Elena Strakhova has been reliable at sixth singles, winning five of her last seven matches.
In doubles play, Detroit has lost only four matches at second and third doubles combined, winning eight at third doubles and seven at second doubles.
Chloe Karoub and Kulikovskaya have worked together for a 5-1 record, with three wins coming at second doubles, while
Raina Halabi and Slizovskaya have teamed up for four victories at third doubles.
Wright State Men
WSU is 6-9 (1-1 HL) in the dual match season and is coming off a dominant 7-0 victory over Valparaiso on Sunday.
Three Raiders have at least 10 wins on the season. Hayden Joblin leads the way after winning five-straight matches to bring his total to 11 wins on the year. Michal Lyzwal is 10-6 and has a perfect 5-0 mark at third singles. Lauri Makikalli is also 10-6, earning seven wins at first singles and adding three more in the second slot.
In doubles play, Jamison Clark and Joblin have won five-straight matches, with four victories coming in the first position. Lyzwa and Kakikalli are 8-2 on the year and are a perfect 2-0 at first doubles and 6-2 at second doubles.
Wright State Women
The Raiders are 6-10 (1-1 HL) coming into this weekend's match and are coming off a 6-1 loss to St. Louis on Thursday at home.
Amy Nini leads the team with eight wins in the dual match season. Nini has six wins at third singles and has had a pair come at the fourth slot. Kayla Tuscany has won two-straight matches at first singles to boost her record to 7-7. Alex Bastock has earned seven wins on the year and has won two straight, including the only victory against St. Louis. Six wins have come at second singles and one at the first spot.
The pair of Nini and Taylor Hines has won seven matches this season, three coming at first doubles and four more at second doubles. Tuscany and Bastock have teamed up for four wins in the first slot for WSU.

The women's team will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. for a match with the Mastodons on Friday, April 5 before rejoining the men's team in Chicago for a doubleheader against UIC on Saturday, April 6.
