DETROIT (4/11/13) -- The Detroit men's tennis team will host non-conference opponent Northern Illinois on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield. This match will mark the final home match for the six seniors on the team. UDM will then hit the road for a match at IUPUI on Saturday and another at IPFW on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., to wrap-up the weekend.
The Seniors
The Titan seniors have amassed a total of 362 wins over the past four years with 189 singles victories and 173 doubles wins. Four have 30 or more singles wins in their careers led by
Cesar Escobar Serrano who has totaled 55 wins, while
Alex Latosinsky (40 wins)
Chris Cheung (39 wins) and
Pablo Nunez (33) round out the quartet. In doubles play, Latosinsky and Cheung are tied for the most doubles wins in school history with 45 each, while Nunez has 36 victories and Serrano has totaled 28.
The Record Books
Senior
Cesar Escobar Serrano has tied the all-time singles wins record with 55 after taking both his matches last Saturday and Sunday. He is now tied with women's head coach Pjotrs Necajevs for the all-time record.
Chris Cheung and
Alex Latosinsky are now tied with 45 career doubles victories. Cheung came into the year with a one-match lead over Latosinsky, 39-38, but Latosinsky has seven wins to Cheung's six to knot their career records at 45 each.
The Titans
Freshman
Rafael Orantes has won his past three singles matches, and seven of his past nine, to bring his team-leading record to 10-6. Serrano and Orantes both have three wins in Horizon League play, with Serrano's only loss coming in three sets at Cleveland State (3/24). Serrano is second on the team with eight wins, with five coming at third singles.
In doubles play, the pair of
Mike Basha and
Alex Latosinsky has seven wins at first doubles and two in conference action.
Jay Joshi and
Pablo Nunez have six wins on the year, with five at second doubles and a pair in HL play.
Northern Illinois
The Huskies come into the weekend with a 13-7 mark after sneaking by IPFW, 4-3, on Sunday. NIU took the doubles point with the pair of Frederic Cadieux and Jovan Zeljkovic taking third doubles, 8-3, and Dor Amir and Simon Formont clinched the point in a hard-fought match at second doubles, 9-7.
In singles play, Foromont earned his 11th win of the year at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Cadieux took his match at second singles, 6-1, 6-1. Amir took his match to a third set, but was able to clinch the match, 7-5, 6-7, 7-6.
Cadieux leads the Huskies with 18 wins in the dual match season with eight coming at second singles and 10 at third, while Amir has a record of 14-5. Amir and Cadieux have worked together for six wins in doubles while Cadieux and Jovan Zlijkovic have a 5-2 record at third doubles.
IUPUI
The Jaguars are 4-16 on the year and 1-2 in Summit League play coming into this weekend. IUPUI is coming off a 6-1 loss at DePaul on Saturday. The Jaguars swept the doubles matches but could not win a set in singles action. The pairs of Jacob Bradley and Nick Volz and Patrick O'Niel and Deon Shafer took their matches at first and second doubles, 8-5, respectively. Jake Hedderig and Jason Jaruvang took their match to a tie-break and came away with a 9-8 (6) triumph to complete the doubles sweep.
Jaruvang leads the team with 12 overall wins and had nine in dual-match play, winning eight of his past 10 matches, and a perfect 3-0 in Summit League action. Louis Sacks has eight wins at sixth singles and two in conference play.
IPFW
The Mastodons come into this weekend at 7-12 (1-0 Summit) after falling to NIU, 4-3, on Sunday. The Mastadons will play IUPUI before hosting Detroit on Sunday.
Against the Huskies, Andres Cobos took his match at third singles, 6-2, 6-4, and Gerard Guell took his match in straight sets at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-0. Joao Freitas battled for a point at fourth singles, dropping his first set, 3-6, but came back to earn the point taking the next two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Cobos and Freitas both lead the team with 10 wins apiece, with Cobos winning four matches at second singles and six at third, while Guell is 6-0 at sixth singles with three wins at fourth singles. Both are on winning streaks with Guell's at eight-straight victories, winning nine of his last 10, and Cobos sitting at six-straight.
In doubles play, Freitas has teamed with Daniel Kang for 11 wins at first doubles and Connor Andrews and Martin Muadi have 10 wins at second doubles.
On the Horizon
The Titans will finish the regular season with a match against Green Bay on April 21 that will be played in Valparaiso, Ind.
