Men's Tennis Set for Horizon League Championships

DETROIT (4/25/13) – The sixth seeded Detroit men's tennis team will open the Horizon League Championships with a match against #3 Youngstown State on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in Indianapolis.

The Regular Season Meeting
YSU took the regular season match-up between the two teams, 4-3, in Youngstown, Ohio on March 23. The Titans started strong, taking the doubles point with wins by Jay Joshi and Pablo Nunez and Rafael Orantes and Chris Cheung. Cesar Escobar Serrano and Nunez both earned singles wins for UDM but the Penguins would take the four remaining singles matches to earn a 4-3 win.

The Titans
Detroit finished the regular season with an 8-13 record and were 1-5 in the Horizon League Freshman Orantes leads the team with 12 wins on the season and is tied with Serrano for three conference victories. Orantes has 11 wins between fifth and sixth singles and has added one more at fourth. The all-time leader in singles wins in school history, Serrano has a 5-1 record at third singles and a 3-1 mark at fourth singles.

In doubles play, the pairs of Mike Basha and Alex Latosinsky along with Jay Joshi and Nunez have seven wins on the year. Joshi and Nunez lead the team with three wins in the Horizon League. Basha and Latosinsky have seven wins at first doubles and Joshi and Nunez have six at second doubles and one in the third slot.

The Penguins
YSU ended the regular season with a 12-8 record and a 4-2 mark in HL matches. Silviu Mistreanu leads the team with a 5-1 record in the Horizon League at first singles and ended the year with 11 total wins. Rodrigo Campos leads the team with 17 singles wins on the season with four in conference play. Campos has a 4-2 record at fourth singles and a 5-3 mark in the fifth slot. He also has three wins at sixth singles and has won his previous four matches.

In doubles play the Penguins have struggled, losing 10 of the 17 matches completed in the Horizon League. Sebastian Hagn and Dawoud Kabli lead the team with 12 wins at first doubles in the dual match season and a 3-3 record in the conference. Mistreanu and Felipe Rosa have 11 wins on the year and a 3-3 record in the HL.

The winner of this match will play #2 Cleveland State on Saturday at the West Indy Racquet Club at 10:30 a.m.
