INDIANAPOLIS (4/27/13) –
The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team dropped its semifinal match to Cleveland State in the Horizon League Championships at the West Indy Racquet Club on Saturday.

"We lost a hard fought match today," said UDM head coach Grant Asher. "It came down to just a few points. The guys were warriors fighting for every point like it was the last. I have never been so proud and honored to coach a group of young men as I was today."

The Vikings took the doubles point with wins at first and third doubles. Pablo Nunez and Jay Joshi took their match to a tiebreak, 8-8, but the match was left unfinished.

Mike Basha and Cesar Escobar Serrano took their matches in straight sets at first and second singles, respectively. Basha took his match 6-2, 6-3 and Serrano earned another point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. CSU took fourth singles, 6-2, 7-6, to tie the match at two points each, but Chris Cheung gave Detroit the lead with a 7-6, 6-3 win at fifth singles.

Alex Latosinsky and Rafael Orantes both took their matches to a third set, but in the end Cleveland State would capture the win and advance to the championship match.

"We lost to CSU, 7-0, just a month ago and the guys worked so hard and prepared well and we knew we could win this match," said Asher. These seniors pulled the team together and set the goal of winning a championship. The These six seniors have come together through different paths, they recruited each other from many different coundtries and backgrounds. At the end of the day we spend so much time together and go through so many emotions and experiences that we are now a family."

Detroit ended its year with a 9-14 record overall and a 1-5 mark in the Horizon League. This was the first year Detroit advanced to the semifinal round of the Horizon League Championships since the UDM men's tennis program was reinstated in 2008.
