DETROIT (4/5/13) -- The Detroit men's tennis team will play a weekend doubleheader on the road with the women's team as the Titans take on UIC on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and Valparaiso on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Detroit Titans
In singles action, freshman
Rafael Orantes leads UDM with eight wins on the season and was the only player to win his singles match against Wright State last Saturday. Senior
Cesar Escobar Serrano is second on the team with six wins, four coming at third singles.
In doubles play, the pairs of
Mike Basha and
Alex Latosinsky along with
Jay Joshi and
Pablo Nunez have both recorded five wins on the year. Basha and Latosinsky have earned five wins at first doubles, while Joshi and Nunez have earned four at second doubles and one more in the third slot.
The Titans are 4-11 on the year and have yet to earn a win in three Horizon League matches.
Chasing Records
Senior
Cesar Escobar Serrano started the year with 47 career wins, eight wins behind the all-time wins leader, Pjotrs Necajevs ('10). Serrano now has six wins on the year, putting him at 53 career victories and just two behind Necajevs (55), with six dual matches left in the season.
Entering the year, senior
Chris Cheung had 39 career doubles wins, but with his last doubles win against Wright State on Saturday, he surpassed Anthony Grassadonia ('91) to become the winningest doubles player in UDM history with 45 wins.
Alex Latosinsky currently sits third all-time with 43 wins.
The UIC Flames
UIC also enters this weekend with a 4-11 (0-2 HL) record. Christopher Cole and Alexander Raa lead the team with seven dual match wins apiece. Raa has tallied four wins at first singles, two more at second singles and one more at third. Cole earned five wins at fourth singles and added a pair of victories at the third position. Both Maurizio Feoli and Rahul Kamath have earned six dual match wins this year.
In doubles play, Raa and Kamath lead the team with four wins, three at first doubles and one at second, and Cole and Alan Reifer have teamed up for a pair of wins at second doubles.
The Valparaiso Crusaders
Valpo enters the weekend with a 9-5 mark and has yet to play its first HL match. The Crusaders are riding a five-match win streak that includes their most recent victory over Creighton, 5-2, on March 14.
Eric Honert has won five-straight matches at first singles to bring his dual match record to 8-6. Michael Baiocchi also has eight dual match wins, seven coming at fourth singles and one at second.
In the dual match season, Valpo has used only three doubles pairs. Baiocci and Michael Savaglio are 9-4 at third doubles and have won their previous five matches. Chris Baum and Danny Oakes have won seven at second doubles and Honert and Lucas Waak have six wins in the first slot.
On the Horizon
The Titans will take a break from HL play when they host Northern Illinois on March 12 and then travel to play IUPUI on March 14 and IPFW on March 14.
