MUNCIE, Ind. (1/17/2015) –
Freshman Nathan Ponton picked up his second-straight win in singles, but the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team could not slow down the Cardinals as Ball State defeated the Titans, 6-1, on Saturday at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
 
Ponton won the lone singles match on the day at No. 4 singles outlasting Jan Jirus 7-6 (9-2) in the first set before closing out the match with a 6-0 tally in the second.
 
Sophomore Patryk Koscielski nearly won his match falling, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 1 to Patrick Elliott, while junior Rafael Orantes dropped a 7-5, 6-3 affair at No. 2 singles to Lucas Anderson.
 
Sophomore Kacper Stelmaszak played well at No. 3 losing a tough two-set match, 7-5, 6-4, to Ray Leonard and sophomore Chance Conley was tripped up by Collin Rigney at No. 6, 6-4, 6-1.
 
In doubles, UDM (0-2) played strong falling in two of the matches, but Conley and Stelmaszak did earn a win at No. 3 surging past Rigney and Matt Helm, 6-4. 
 
Detroit will conclude a busy opening week tomorrow as the Titans return home to face Toledo at 6:00 p.m., in their home opener at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
