SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (2/6/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team was on a mission to pick up its first win of the season and the Titans did that in a big way as the red, white and blue cruised past Wayne State, 6-1, on Friday night at the Franklin Athletic Club.
Detroit moved to 1-4 on the season, while local-rival Wayne State fell to 0-1.
UDM took control from the start as senior
Jay Joshi and sophomore
Ismail Kadyrov got the Titans going in doubles earning the win in the top position, 6-3. Sophomore
Patryk Koscielski and freshman
Nathan Ponton then clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 tally at No. 2.
The Titans would go on to claim five of the six singles matches which included four straight-set victories.
Koscielski started the Titan charge for a win by dispatching Clement Charriere at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1.
Ponton posted a 6-4, 6-2, triumph at the second position over Mohamed Kechai, while sophomore
Kacper Stelmaszak raced past Trey Keating, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3.
Sophomore
Chance Conley defeated Ryan Carlson, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6, and Joshi fought back to take a 6-2, 4-6, 10-3, decision at No. 5.
The Titans will now look to keep up their winning ways in conference play as Detroit hosts defending Horizon League champion Green Bay on Sunday. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m., at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
