Nathan Ponton tallied singles wins, but the defending Horizon League Champion Green Bay Phoenix was just too strong as the Titans lost a 5-2 match-up on Sunday night.
Detroit (1-5, 0-1 HL) dropped the doubles point with a couple of tough setbacks at No. 1 and No. 3. At the second spot, sophomore
Patryk Koscielski and Ponton picked up the only win by a 6-4 score.
In singles, Ponton held strong for a 7-6, 6-2, victory over Leopold Gomez Islinger at No. 2, while Orantes used a dominating second set to post a 7-6 (4), 6-1, triumph over Florian Kraenzler at No. 4.
Three of the other four matches were close, but just didn't go the Titans way. Sophomore
Ismail Kadyrov fell in a three-set thriller, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 10-8, in the sixth position. Sophomore
Kacper Stelmaszak was edged, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 3, while sophomore
Chance Conley was upended, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5.
UDM will have a few weeks off before its next set of matches as the Titans travel to Florida for spring break from Mar. 2-6. Detroit is scheduled to play in six matches against La Salle, Post, Rollins, Bethune-Cookman, Mount St. Mary's and South Carolina State.
