SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (3/22/2015) -- Meeting for the second time this year, the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team put forth a great effort in dropping a 4-0 decision to Michigan State on Sunday night at the Franklin Athletic Club.
Michigan State (10-9, 1-1 Big Ten) – the alma mater of Titan head coach
Grant Asher - won the first meeting, 7-0, but Detroit (4-9, 0-1 HL) gave the Spartans all they could handle at home.
Sophomore
Patryk Koscielski and freshman
Nathan Ponton teamed up for the lone win as the duo dispatched Jasper Koenen and Doug Zade, 8-5, at No. 2. It was the second time this year that the Titan tandem defeated a doubles team from MSU as they won No. 2 doubles back in late January.
The early doubles point came down to No. 3, where junior
Rafael Orantes and sophomore
Chance Conley were edged, 8-6.
In singles, the Spartans were able to take No. 3, 5 and 6 for the victory.
At the top spot, Koscielski battled No. 123 Gijs Linders and was leading the nationally-ranked netter, 6-4, 4-3, when the bout was halted due to MSU gaining the team's fourth point.
Sophomore
Kacper Stelmaszak also won the first set at No. 4 when the match was called with the score 6-4, 1-2.
Detroit will get right back into Horizon League play next weekend as it visits Cleveland State on Friday night, March 27, and Youngstown State on Sunday, March 29.
