CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio (3/27/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team showed a lot of energy early on, but the Titans could not sustain their strong start in a 5-2 setback to Cleveland State on Friday night at the Chagrin Valley Athletic Club.
Detroit (4-10, 0-2 HL) took command early by winning two of the three doubles matches and securing the 1-0 lead.
Sophomore
Patryk Koscielski and freshman
Nathan Ponton won the first completed match, 6-2, at No. 2, while junior
Rafael Orantes and freshman
Chance Conley clichéd the doubles point with a thrilling 7-6 (5) triumph at No. 3.
The Titans then appeared to have all the momentum in singles winning the first set at No. 1, 2 and 3, but Cleveland State (9-5, 2-0 HL) was able to hold off the red, white and blue and tally five singles matches.
The lone UDM winner was at top the top of the line-up where Koscielski defeated Joe VanMeter, 6-4, 6-4.
Ponton won his first set at No. 2 singles, but would end up falling, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, while Orantes claimed his first set before dropping a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 3.
Sophomore
Kacper Stelmaszak tried to get back in his match but fell, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 4 and sophomore
Ismail Kadyrov lost a heartbreaker at No. 6, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3.
The Titans will get right back to work on Sunday as Detroit visits Youngstown State. That is part of a doubleheader with the women's team and both matches are slated to begin at 9:00 a.m., at the Boardman Tennis Center.
