CHICAGO (4/11/2015) -- The Detroit men's tennis team's rally in singles just came up short as the University of Detroit Mercy saw UIC squeeze past them, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Detroit (5-14, 1-5 HL) lost the doubles point, but nearly came back to win the necessary matches in singles taking the top half of the line-up.
Sophomore
Patryk Koscielski posted a great comeback victory as he outlasted UIC's (6-9, 2-1 HL) Issac Lloveras at No. 1, 6-3, 7-6 (3), 10-3.
Freshman
Nathan Ponton was able to dispatch Christopher Cole at No. 2, 7-5, 6-1, while junior
Rafael Orantes claimed his match at No. 3 due to an injury retirement.
Sophomore
Kacper Stelmaszak lost a tough battle, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 and sophomore
Ismail Kadyrov was downed, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6.
UDM dropped two close matches in doubles to start the bout as Koscielski and Ponton fell, 6-4, at No. 2, and Orantes and sophomore
Chance Conley were also upended by the same score at No. 3.
The Titans will now end the regular season on the road next Sunday, April 19, as the red, white and blue face IUPUI. It will then be onto the Horizon League Championship for the squad as it will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament, held at Purdue, from April 24-26.
