ANN ARBOR, Mich. (10/17/2014) --
Sophomore Patryk Koscielski started the day with a win and a trip to the main draw of singles as play continued for the Titans at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, held at the Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of Michigan.

"I am happy for Patryk that for the second year in a row, he has gone the farthest a Titan has ever been under my tenure at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships," said head coach Grant Asher. "A lot of coaches came up and talked about how well he competed and teammates took notice so it definitely helped build our program this weekend."

Friday's slate included the final round of qualifying singles, the first round of main draw singles and the first round of main draw doubles.

Koscielski went 2-0 with a pair of straight-set victories in the opening round of qualifiers on Thursday and needed a win over Notre Dame's Billy Pecor on Friday to advance to the main draw. The Titan got just that with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph to finish as one of the top eight performers in the qualifying bracket, earning a bid to the main event for the second-straight year.

"The win over a quality opponent from Notre Dame was big," said Coach Asher. "To think that, he (Patryk) wasn't even originally selected to compete in the event and then going 3-0 in qualifying singles and battling an All-American really showed the committee that there is some great tennis being played at the mid-major level and hopefully we don't get overlooked again."

The showdown in the main draw of singles pitted Koscielski against third-seeded and No. 44 Tim Kopinski of Illinois, who was All-Big Ten last season as well as an All-American. The second-year player did not disappoint in his effort, but he just could not get ahead falling 6-0, 6-1.

"Patryk played tough, but just could not get those deciding points. He played Tim last year and one thing about Patryk, he is never scared of who he faces," added Coach Asher.

In doubles, Detroit had four teams in the main draw and the Titans left everything out on the court in dropping all four bouts.

"I thought some of the guys played nervous out there, but playing this level of opponents at this kind of tournament will only make us better," Coach Asher said. "I talked to Patryk and some of the guys out there and I said, when you look at a guy like Kopinski, one of the reasons why he is an All-American is how he plays the pressure points and we need to continue to get better at that."

Koscielski teamed up with sophomore Chance Conley and the duo fell to the seconded-seeded and 27th-ranked Notre Dame team of Pecor and Alex Lawson, 8-4, while junior Rafael Orantes and freshman Nathan Ponton were turned away, 8-2, against fifth seeded Alex Petrone and Runhao Hua of Michigan.

Senior Jay Joshi and freshman Kacper Stelmaszak took on 11th seeded Kevin Wong and Michael Zhu of the Wolverines in an 8-4 setback, while junior Tanguy Crosnier and sophomore Ismail Kadyrov were upended 8-0 to Western Michigan's Maik Steiner and Jefta Kecic.

The event concludes the fall season for Detroit as the Titans will now get ready for the spring duel season, which will begin in January. UDM will release its spring schedule in the near future.
