EAST LANSING, Mich. (1/31/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team gave nationally-ranked Michigan State a tough battle on Saturday night as the Titans fell, 7-0, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Complex.
Detroit (0-4) put up a great fight in doubles, nearly taking the opening point from No. 59 Michigan State (4-3).
After losing 6-0 at the third position, the Titans came back to even things up as sophomore
Patryk Koscielski and freshman
Nathan Ponton claimed No. 2, 7-5.
The last doubles match went the distance with senior
Jay Joshi and sophomore
Ismail Kadyrov on the prowl for a win. Both tandems traded the lead, but a late Spartan push gave the home squad a 7-6 (4) decision.
In singles, Ponton gave a great effort at No. 3 winning the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second, 6-3. In the tiebreaker, Ponton and Harry Jadun battled hard, but the Spartan netter got the best of the Titan, 11-9.
Junior
Rafael Orantes also had a close singles match as he was upended at the fourth spot, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), while Koscielski lost, 6-3, 7-6 (2), to #76 Gijs Linders at No. 1
The Titans will get back on the practice courts next week before a pair of home matches against Wayne State on Friday, Feb. 6, and Green Bay on Sunday, Feb. 8. Both bouts will be played at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
