Senior Day On Thursday Highlights Busy Week For Men’s Tennis

DETROIT (4/7/2015) -- Less than a week after clinching a spot in the Horizon League Championship, the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team will gear up for three matches in three days starting with a home affair with Northern Illinois on Thursday.

The home match with the Huskies will be Senior Day for the Titans as they honor their lone four-year letter winner in Jay Joshi. Joshi has posted 51 total victories in his career, including 14 single wins. His 37 doubles triumphs are tied for fifth in school history, while his 18 doubles wins as a freshman are tied for second.

The match has a start time of 4:00 p.m., with Senior Day festivities at 3:45, and it will be held at the Franklin Athletic Club n Southfield.

Detroit (5-11, 1-3 HL) earned a trip back to the postseason as it cruised past Wright State, 6-1, last Saturday. UDM won five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles contests. Sophomore Patryk Koscielski leads Detroit at the No. 1 position and has 10 wins to top the team, while junior Rafael Orantes and freshman Nathan Ponton are 3-1 in Horizon League action.

Northern Illinois will come into the Motor City with a 15-5 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the Mid-American Conference. NIU has taken on one HL team so far beating UIC, 5-2, back in late January. Six Huskies are in double digits in singles wins, led by Tom Hjertonsson's 17-12 record, mostly at No. 3 and No. 4. Carlos Manzanas is 16-9 playing at No. 5, while Louis-Philippe Hamel is also 16-9, mostly at No. 4.

The Titans will hit the road right after the match with NIU as they play at Valparaiso on Friday and at UIC on Saturday. The red, white and blue already know it is in the conference tournament and will now look to improve seeding.

Valparaiso is 17-5 on the season and 1-1 in the conference with a win over Wright State (6-1) and a loss to Green Bay (4-3). Jeffrey Schorsch – First Team All-HL last season as well as the Freshman of the Year – leads the team with a 23-7 record. Garrett Gardner is 21-7, while Michael Savaglio and Charlie Emhardt each have 20 singles wins apiece.

UIC is 5-9 overall and 1-1 in league play as the Flames have defeated Wright State (4-3) and have fallen to Green Bay (5-2). Carl Hedstrom and Louis Theodor have nine wins each to top the squad, while Mitch Granger has recorded eight.

There will be no live stats for the matches and results will be posted as soon as they are available.
