Over the past several weeks, the University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics has been releasing its All-Decade Teams of the 2010s and are in the final week with three teams left. For a full schedule of the teams set to be released, click here.
DETROIT (5/18/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics is unveiling its All-Decade Teams of the 2010s, compiling the best student-athletes across the past 10 seasons (2010-19) into a First and Second Team in each intercollegiate sport. Next up is a squad that earned a Horizon League runner-up finish during the decade and had several individual standouts in Titan women's outdoor track and field.
The Titans were runner-up in the Horizon League in 2014, scoring a Titan decade-best 106 points to finish second to Youngstown State at the league championship. Detroit Mercy won two of its 10 Horizon League outdoor track and field during the decade (2010-19) that season. The Titans placed fourth the next season in 2015 with 86 points at the league outdoor championships.
Two Titans were named Horizon League Athletes of the Year during the decade with Brittany Horne sharing the honor at the 2010 championships and Sydnie Fetherolf receiving the honor in 2018 during her senior season. Kye (Dozier) May earned the Horizon League Running Newcomer of the Year laurel in 2016.
Horne won two Horizon League outdoor titles in 2010 -- breaking the Horizon League record mark in the hammer throw at 61.30 meters (201-1), a mark which still stands. She also won the discus in 44.04 meters. Ashley Bayles won the discus later in the decade with a mark of 42.78m in 2015. Louisa Coppola was a two-time HL outdoor champion, winning the 1,500-meter run in 4:32.01 in 2014 before capturing the 10,000-meter run (37:18.09) in 2015.
The Titans won two relays at the Horizon League Outdoor Championships -- winning the 4x100 meter relay in 2017 as the squad of
A.J. Carnathan,
Kyri Jackson, Brogan Holmes, Alyson Hamilton brought home the title in 48.49. The Titans were also champions in the 4x400 meter relay in 2014 with the squad of Brandee Hart, Alani Letang, Shannon Marchant, Jasmine Greene earning the title with a time of 3:53.85. Sequoia Calhoun was also a Horizon League champion in the 400-meter dash in a school-record time of 54.93, the third-fastest time at the league meet during the decade.
The red, white and blue had two Heptathlon champions during the decade with Aisha Potts-Tyre breaking the school record with a score of 4,659 to win the league crown in 2015, before
Kyri Jackson captured the title three years later in 2018 with a total of 4,429. Fetherolf captured the 1,500-meter run four years after Coppola, earning the title in 2018 with a time of 4:49.39.
Horne represented the Titans at the Preliminary Round of the NCAA Championships in back-to-back years (2009, 2010), both times in the hammer throw. Horne placed 23rd in the hammer in 2009, before placing 14th for the Titans just a year later in 2010 at the Preliminary Round, the best-ever finish for the program at the NCAA regionals. She had a throw of 56.12m (184-1) in 2010.
Fetherolf was named a President's Award winner after the 2017-18 school year and Susan Kalkstein was a Class Valedictorian during the decade. Three Titan women's track and field student-athletes earned the Dad Butler honor for showing determination in rehabilitation of an athletic injury -- Amanda Campbell (2012), Haley Morairty (2014) and Ashley Bayes (2017).
All-League honors, award winners, standout and record-breaking performances, academic achievements and accolades as well as submissions from fans were all considered for each of the Detroit Mercy All-Decade Teams of the 2010s.
