Daly was remembered mostly for his encounters with the legendary Glenn Cunningham, who held the world record in the mile run during the mid-1930’s. Daly set a record for the track at Northwestern High School by running a 4.29 mile. In his first varsity race he placed third at the Notre Dame Relays with a mile time of 4:18.8. At the International Indoor meet, he finished only four-tenths of a second behind Cunningham with a mark of 4:17.8. As a freshman he ran in a meet vs. Michigan State Normal (now better known as Eastern Michigan University) and broke the Dinan Field Stadium record for the mile and turned in the fastest time recorded in Michigan during the 1934 outdoor track season with a 4:21.8 mark. He also set a record at Alumni Field in Ypsilanti by being clocked at 4:21.3 for the mile against the Hurons. Daly held the Michigan two mile record for freshmen in 1934.
