Wood was a devastating guard on the 1947-49 squads and the captain of the 1949 team that won the Missouri Valley Conference crown. He was an All-Catholic, All-America, and second team All-Midwest in 1949. He recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass in a victory over Wayne State in 1949.
