Jerry Fitzgerald shined for U-D fencing from 1960-64. He was an All-American in 1962 with the foil and recorded over 100 career wins, posting a school-record 44-4 mark as a senior and 35-11 record as a junior. He helped the team to its second-best record in school history at 12-4 and a bid to the NCAA Championships, and that was after he co-captained with his twin brother John in 1961. He won the Michigan Regional championship in the foil in 1964 and 1965 and was third in the sabre in 1963. He qualified for the 1964 Olympic fencing trials and reached the semifinals. As an amateur, he earned 13 golds, four silvers, and two bronze Medals in the Amateur Fencers League of America in the foil.Â
